Regeneration, God’s Grace, New Birth–Part 4
“We’ve been telling people the lie…that if you do this [pray a prayer], then God will make you born again. You see the only difference between baptismal regeneration and decisional regeneration is the new birth is just attached to a different act. On one it’s water and on the other it’s a prayer.”

How Free is the Will?
Philadelphia Baptist Confession of Faith (1742)
Chapter 9: Of Free Will
- God hath endued the will of man with that natural liberty and power of acting upon choice, that it is neither forced, nor by any necessity of nature determined to do good or evil.[1 ]
- Man, in his state of innocency had freedom, and power, to will, and to do, that which was good, and well-pleasing to God;[2] but yet was mutable, so that he might fall from it.[3]
- Man, by his fall unto a state of sin, hath wholly lost all ability of will to any spiritual good accompanying salvation;[4] so as a natural man, being altogether averse from that good and dead in sin,[5] is not able, by his own strength, to convert himself or to prepare himself thereunto.[6]
- When God converts a sinner, and translates him into the state of grace, He freeth him from his natural bondage under sin,[7] and by His grace alone, enables him freely to will, and do that which is spiritually good;[8] yet so that, by reason of his remaining corruptions, he doth not perfectly nor only will that which is good, but doth also will that which is evil.[9]
- The will of man is made perfectly and immutably free to good alone in the state of glory only.[10]

Tuyên Xưng Philadelphia (1742)
Đoạn 9: Về ý chí tự do

To the Ends of the Earth
“Does a belief in sovereign grace stymie missions and evangelism? If that belief is rightly understood and rightly applied, the answer is an emphatic no….”
-Jason K. Allen, President, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and College
Too often those who least understand the biblical doctrine of Calvinism accuse Calvinists of a non-evangelistic spirit and practice. We do often wonder how frequently those same accusers share their faith with the lost. Nonetheless, the more we study church history the more we see that a life centered on God’s glory leads to passion and boldness for Christ’s mission.

TULIP & GOSPEL
I recently came across an interesting suggestion. Read here and see what you think:
“So, what is the suggested acronym? G.O.S.P.E.L. What better way to make reference to the Doctrines of Grace? Calvinism, after all, is about the sovereign grace of God in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The Doctrines of Grace are the biblical teachings regarding G.O.S.P.E.L. grace and glory. Allow me, therefore, to supply a brief explanation of this acronym.
“G.O.S.P.E.L.
“God’s Glory: Foundational to the Doctrines of Grace is the biblical teaching that God’s redeeming work is to the praise of His glorious grace (Eph. 1:3-14 especially vv. 6, 12; Rom. 11:33-36).
“G.O.S.P.E.L.
“Original Sin: This point replaces Total Depravity in T.U.L.I.P. The doctrine of original sin is greatly lost in our day, which is one good reason for making this change.
G.O.S.P.E.L
“Sovereign Election: This point replaces Unconditional Election in T.U.L.I.P. The point of unconditional election is that God’s choice of His redeemed people was not rooted in anything they have done, but simply in the sovereign and good purposes of God (otherwise it’s not grace).
“G.O.S.P.E.L.
“Particular Atonement: This point replaces Limited Atonement in T.U.L.I.P. We Calvinists are often forced to clarify the meaning of limited atonement, and our clarifications nearly always include the use of the word ‘particular’.
“G.O.S.P.E.L.
“Effectual Grace: This point replaces irresistible grace in T.U.L.I.P. Like the previous point, I believe this point will also provide much needed clarification.
“G.O.S.P.E.L.
“Lasting Grace: This point replaces Perseverance of the Saints in T.U.L.I.P.”

FIVE ONLYS OF THE REFORMATION
October 31 is Reformation Day, the day Martin Luther (1483-1546) nailed up his 95 theses. Thus, the five “solas” or “onlys” seem appropriate:
- Scripture Alone: Scripture alone as the authority for life and practice in the church. (Only Scripture; Latin: Sola Scriptura)
- Grace Alone: God’s sovereign grace alone as the reason for our salvation without any actual or potential human merit, effort, faith, or work. (Only Grace; Latin: Sola Gratia)
- Faith Alone: Justification by faith alone and no human works. (Only faith; Latin: Sola Fide)
- Christ Alone: Salvation through the Person and work of Jesus Christ alone. (Only Christ; Latin: Solus Christus)
- Glory of God Alone: All things ultimately for the glory of God alone. (Only God’s glory; Latin: Soli Deo Gloria)
